README File for "JWC's EAW Maps v3.1"

Things to note concerning these maps:

---I was not able to make these like my earlier (and original) white
background/black print ones. It would have taken too long and at
any rate, I think it would have been difficult to get all of Germany
on just one page for print. The downside to this: the maps take
longer to download and use a lot of color ink from your printer!
The upside: these maps should be fairly easy to compare with what
you see on your EAW mission maps.

---The maps of England are twice the normal size of a screenshot.
I had to double their size to prevent them from being unreadable since
there would have far too many names of cities and airbases in close
proximity to one another. Even at 2X, the map of England in 1943-45
is STILL pretty congested!

---I have made some changes to the maps of England. The map that you
see in EAW does not always represent what the EAW world looks like.
What it is SUPPOSED to be and what you actually see when you are flying
in the game can be two different things! For example, the game map
shows Ipswich on the coast, bordering the water. But if you find
Ipswich when you're flying, it is landlocked! On the other hand,
Gravesend and Rochester are both placed on the North bank of the Thames
on the EAW map, but in real life are on the South bank. When you
actually fly over the Thames in EAW, they ARE both where they are in
real life: on the South bank! I have made some changes to my map to
reflect this.

Here are my changes to the map of England:

--made Ipswich and Martlesham landocked
--eliminated river that runs past Norwich
--narrowed Thames and moved Rochester and Gravesend to South Bank
--Portsmouth is no longer shown on an island, but on a peninsula
--added inlet from sea west of Merston
--eliminated river that runs past Holmsley South
--eliminated river that ran between West Malling and Detling
--eliminated some of the coastal inlets above Rochford
--made a rough outline of the London urban area

Now you should be able to look out of the EAW cockpit and see a world
that corresponds to your map!

(there are still some things that I haven't fixed yet, such as the
"fork" in the Thames West of London. This is not shown on the mission
map, but exists in the game.)

---In Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg, there
are airfields and cities. If you only see a small red square and the
name next to it is white, then it is a city. If the red square is
larger, has a white dot in the center, and its name is in yellow, then
it is an airfield. There is however, one thing to remember: if you
see an airfield, it may exist on its own, it may be located next to a
big city, it may be located next to a small town, or there may be a
small town some distance away. Obviously when "Berlin" appears as an
airfield we know that there is a large city right there too!
Unfortunately, when it comes to lesser-known airfields, it is
impossible to tell which of these possibilities you are looking at
without actually flying there! If anybody has any information
concerning this topic, please feel free to e-mail me and let me know,
as I am now trying to compile a list of this information to help in
finding targets to strafe. If I can obtain all the information that I
need to do this, I can include it in a future update of these maps.

---In order to make the map of France print easily on standard 8.5 x 11
inch paper, it was necessary to leave off Brest in far Western France. I
have added an arrow showing the direction of Brest. This is the only
target that is not shown on the map, and thus should not be too hard to
find.

---the map of France, Belgium, and the Netherlands includes a closeup
view of the Pas-de-Calais area since this is pretty jumbled at the
normal size.

These maps have been compiled from screenshots of the maps in EAW.
I have also included a list of all the 162 usable airbases in EAW.
Charles Gunst provided a list of these bases in the zip file that
contained Nick Bell's DOS-based EAW Edit. The file listed the bases
as they appeared for hex-editing. I compiled my own list through
trial and error (or rather through Alt+Tab-ing my way through all
the bases!). The numbers before each of the bases in the AirBase
List are for Nick Bell's editor. The list itself is divided into
two sections: At the top the bases are broken down by country, then
listed alphabetically. Below this, all the bases are listed in
numerical order from 0-161. As far as changing your own Air Base
in EAW, I doubt that these numbers are necessary, since Charles
Gunst's EAW Pilot editor (a Windows EAW editor which is also included
in ECA Control Panel as the "Squadron Editor" function) allows you
to change airbases without entering a numberical value. (The
notation about the game crashing with numbers above 161 is due to the
fact that since there are only 162 bases, the game will crash if you
try to enter a number higher than 161 into the Editor---0 is included
in the list, so the highest number is 161.)

Please note that a few of the places listed may not be shown on the
Mission Map during briefings or the game itself, depending on what
time period your mission takes place in. For instance, there
are 8 targets in Occupied France that only show up (as far as I can
tell so far) during the late stages (early Spring '44) of a 1943
British campaign (I was flying the Spitfire MkIX) and the early '44
British Spitfire campaign. I have currently located 7 of these 8.
There are also two targets in England of the same type--I have not
yet pinpointed their location. (Thanks to Charles Gunst for both
his list of EAW Target Names and his correspondence on the same, all
of which allowed me to discover the names of the last two in France
and the two in England, and to EAW Forum member Stanley 99 who sent
me Mr. Gunst's list in the first place)

Here is a list of these targets:

IN FRANCE--
Martinvast
Sottevast
Mimoyecques
Siracourt
Watten
Wizernes
Londinieres
Trappes

IN ENGLAND---
Wisley
Hamble
